I’ve seen some fucked things come out of Melbourne hotel corridors after midnight. I’ve stood outside places where the blood on the carpet told a clearer story than any police statement ever would. But this one has the stink of something that was never meant to leave the rooms.

Last night, after the Swans put Essendon to the sword at the MCG, several of their players checked into the Pullman on Wellington Parade in East Melbourne. By the early hours of Monday morning the place had turned into a crime scene. Victoria Police confirmed they are investigating a report of sexual assault at the hotel. The club, through CEO Matthew Pavlich, fronted the cameras looking like men who’d just been told the season might be over before it properly began. “Extremely shocked and disappointed,” Pavlich said. The standard corporate language that always arrives after the damage is already done.
